Why Wisdom Teeth Cause So Much Trouble
Wisdom teeth - the third molars that arrive in your late teens or early twenties - are famous for being more trouble than they're worth. The reason is simple: modern jaws often don't have room for them. When there isn't space, they come in at an angle, only partly break through the gum, or stay trapped in the bone entirely (what dentists call "impacted"). That's when problems start, and why so many people have them removed. Here's what to expect with a dentist in Ottawa.
Signs Yours May Need to Come Out
Not every wisdom tooth causes symptoms, which is why regular dental exams and X-rays matter - problems are often spotted before they hurt. When there are symptoms, the common ones include pain at the back of the mouth, swollen or tender gums, jaw stiffness, a bad taste or persistent bad breath, and pressure or discomfort against the neighbouring teeth.
When (and Why) Removal Is Recommended
Removal is usually recommended to prevent bigger problems down the road: damage or decay in the second molars, repeated gum infections around a partly-erupted tooth, cysts that can form around impacted teeth, and crowding that can undo orthodontic work. If your teeth are healthy and well-positioned, they may not need to come out at all; we only recommend removal when there's a good reason.
Your Comfort: Sedation Options
Wisdom teeth removal makes a lot of people nervous, so comfort is a priority. Depending on your case and preference, options range from local anesthesia (awake but numb) to sedation - nitrous oxide for light relaxation, oral sedation for a deeper calm, or IV sedation, a twilight state with little memory of the procedure that's especially popular for wisdom teeth. If you have any sedation beyond local, you'll need someone to drive you home.
The Procedure and Recovery
Removing all four wisdom teeth typically takes about 45 to 90 minutes. Afterward, most people are back to normal activities within three to five days, with swelling peaking around day two or three and easing over the following week. The keys to smooth healing are resting with your head elevated, using ice, sticking to soft, cool foods at first, taking any prescribed medication, and - importantly - avoiding straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing for the first day or so.
What It Costs in Ottawa
In Ottawa, a single wisdom tooth generally runs $300 to $750, and all four about $1,200 to $3,000, with complex impactions costing more. These ranges cover the extraction itself; add-ons like PRF (platelet-rich fibrin, used to speed healing) are quoted separately. Most dental plans cover a meaningful portion when removal is medically necessary, and we verify your coverage and bill directly. These are general ranges - you'll get a clear estimate first, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan may help eligible patients.
Why Younger Is Often Easier
There's a reason wisdom teeth tend to come out in the late teens and early twenties: the roots aren't fully developed and the bone is less dense, so the procedure is usually simpler and recovery quicker. That's also why we like to evaluate wisdom teeth early - so if removal is the right call, it happens at the easiest time.
