Dentures vs. Dental Implants: Which Is Right for You?

Dentures vs. Dental Implants: Which Is Right for You?

Two Good Options, Two Very Different Approaches

When you're replacing missing teeth, dentures and dental implants are the two paths most Ottawa patients weigh. Both restore your smile and your ability to eat - but they work very differently, and the right choice depends on your budget, your health, and what matters most to you. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide with your dentist.

How Each One Works

Dentures are removable prosthetics that rest on the gums - full dentures for a whole arch, partials for a few teeth. Implants are small titanium posts placed in the jawbone that act as artificial roots, topped with a crown, bridge, or denture. That single difference - resting on the gums versus anchored in the bone - drives almost every other trade-off between them.

Comparing What Matters

  • Comfort and bite: implants feel the closest to natural teeth and restore nearly full chewing power; full dentures restore roughly a quarter of natural bite force and can shift when you eat or speak.
  • Bone health: implants stimulate the jawbone and help prevent the bone loss (and "sunken" look) that develops under dentures over time.
  • Longevity: an implant can last decades - often a lifetime - while dentures typically need replacing every five to ten years and periodic relines in between.
  • Maintenance: you brush and floss implants like natural teeth; dentures come out daily for cleaning and soaking.
  • Getting there: dentures are non-surgical and ready in weeks; implants involve minor surgery and three to six months of healing.

The Cost Picture

Upfront, dentures cost less - a full denture is about $1,500 to $3,000 per arch. A single implant runs about $3,000 to $5,000, and larger implant solutions more. But it's worth thinking long-term: because dentures are replaced every several years and implants can last decades, the lifetime costs are often closer than they first appear. A middle option, implant-supported dentures, runs roughly $10,000 to $25,000 per arch. These are general ranges - we give you a clear estimate up front, bill insurance directly, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan may help eligible patients.

The Middle Ground: Implant-Supported Dentures

If full implants are out of reach but traditional dentures feel too loose, implant-supported dentures are often the sweet spot. Just two to four implants hold a denture firmly in place - far more stable, better for chewing, and gentler on the jawbone, while still costing less than replacing every tooth with its own implant.

Which Should You Choose?

In short: lean toward dentures if budget is the priority, surgery isn't an option, or you need teeth quickly. Lean toward implants if you want the most natural result, value long-term durability and bone preservation, and are healthy enough for a minor procedure. And consider implant-supported dentures if you want much of the stability of implants at a lower cost. Our detailed dentures-versus-implants comparison goes deeper on each factor.
