Restorative DentistryDentures in Ottawa: Types, Fit, and What to Expect

Modern Dentures Aren't Your Grandparent's False Teeth
If the word "dentures" brings to mind bulky, obvious teeth in a glass by the bed, today's options will surprise you. Modern dentures are crafted from advanced materials for a more natural look, a better fit, and - with implant support - remarkable stability. Whether you're replacing a few teeth or a full arch, there's a comfortable, natural-looking solution. Here's what Ottawa patients should know when working with their dentist.
The Three Types of Dentures
- Full (complete) dentures replace all the teeth in an arch and rest on the gums. Best for patients who have lost all their teeth on the top, bottom, or both.
- Partial dentures replace several missing teeth and clasp onto the remaining natural ones, holding them in place. Best when you still have healthy natural teeth.
- Implant-supported dentures (overdentures) snap or screw onto a few dental implants for far greater stability - restoring much more of your natural bite and helping prevent the jawbone loss that comes with traditional dentures.
What to Expect: The Denture Process
Conventional dentures usually come together over about three to six weeks. It starts with a consultation and treatment plan, followed by detailed impressions of your mouth. Before the final dentures are made, you'll try in a wax model to check the fit, bite, tooth colour, and how they support your lips and cheeks - and we adjust until you're happy. Then your finished dentures are delivered, with a few follow-up visits to fine-tune comfort as you settle in.
Getting Used to Them
Most people adapt within about a month. It's normal to notice more saliva, a few sore spots, or some tricky sounds at first - reading aloud helps, and any pressure points are easily adjusted. Start with softer foods cut small, chew on both sides, and work up to firmer foods as you get comfortable.
What Dentures Cost in Ottawa
Denture costs depend on the type and materials. As a general guide in Ottawa, a full denture runs about $1,500 to $3,000 per arch, and a partial denture about $1,000 to $2,500; implant-supported dentures cost more but last longer and function better. Most plans cover a share, and we bill your insurance directly. These are ballpark ranges - we provide a clear estimate before treatment, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan may help eligible patients.
Caring for Your Dentures
Rinse after meals, brush daily with a denture cleanser (not regular toothpaste), and soak overnight to keep them moist. Handle them over a towel or a sink of water so they don't break if dropped, and keep up with checkups - your mouth changes over time, so a periodic reline keeps the fit snug. With good care, dentures typically last five to ten years.
Dentures, Bridges, or Implants?
Dentures are one of several ways to replace missing teeth. If you're deciding between removable and fixed options, our comparison of dentures versus implants and our guide to dental bridges can help you weigh cost, comfort, and longevity.
